The EEZ's of member states of the Sub-Regional Fisheries Commission (SRFC) , endowed with rich and abundant fisheries resources, face a major problem of illegal fishing activities by national, sub-regional and DWFN fishing vessels.

The offences most frequently observed are:

- Fishing without licence;
- Improper or even the absence of marking of vessels;
- Fishing in prohibited zones; and
- Use of wrong mesh sized fishing gear.

Results of aerial surveillance missions carried out by the Surveillance Operations Co-ordinating Unit (SOCU) of the SRFC in the waters of member states of the SRFC over the years have indicated that the zone where most of the offences occurred are in Guinea-Bissau, Guinea and Sierra Leone (called the Southern States).
